Columnist and historian Simon Heffer presents essays on five well-loved comic actors in early British film.
Alastair Sim might best remembered for portraying Scrooge, but Simon also recalls performances in The Happiest Days of Your Life, Laughter in Paradise, Captain Boycott and An Inspector Calls.
He concludes by revealing the little-known story of how Sim played the main role - or, rather, roles in The Belles of St Trinian's - thanks to a well-known actress being unavailable....
