The Listening Project - When Talking Matters

Fi Glover presents a new and extended weekly edition of the programme with voices past and present on the shared experience of being in lockdown. Sisters talk about the transformation of the younger one from being little sister living at home to little sister living in the big wide world – in Canada – even taking to housework and cooking for the first time. A powerful and moving conversation between mother and daughter - talking about the late husband/father's alcoholism and death and how it impacted on them; and what it would be like if he were alive during lockdown. Acquaintances share how they are managing their time in lockdown and the things they have in common.

The Listening Project is a Radio 4 initiative that offers a snapshot of contemporary Britain in which people across the UK volunteer to have a conversation. The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moments of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in this decade of the millennium.
