Danielle speaks to Alika, who was sectioned twice in his early 20s. Alika describes the experience of being detained by the police, something that he found both scary and humiliating. They discuss how the way you’re treated during a detention makes a big difference to your mental state.

Danielle decides to meet the professionals who are often on the scene when somebody is sectioned. She talks with Kevin Stone, an Approved Mental Health Professional and hears from David Vass, a police constable working on the mental health triage team in Hertfordshire.

Presented by Danielle Manning, Sectioned is a five-part series that explores what it means to be sectioned under the mental health act and how it can change your life. Hear the stories of people with lived experience of being sectioned and discover what it means to have your freedom taken away for your own safety, and the safety of others.

Produced by Maddie Hickish. The Executive Producer is Nick Minter. It is a Wisebuddah production for BBC Radio 1.
