Is the long throw-in back?

“The long throw-in is back” according to England boss Thomas Tuchel, but is he correct? As we know sport is about fine margins, so are football teams now utilising the tactic made famous 20 years ago in the English Premier League to gain an edge over their rivals?

More Than The Score has assembled its very own team of long throw experts from a world record holder to a throw-in specialist.

Thomas Gronnemark has made a living out of throw-ins as a former throw-in coach at Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund, while Republic of Ireland international Megan Campbell knows how to launch the ball into the box as the world record holder of the longest throw-in by a women’s player.

They both join John Bennett and BBC Sport’s football tactics correspondent Umir Irfan to look at what it takes to perfect the art and tactic of a long-throw, the advantages that can be gained, tactical trends and if more countries will prioritise the long throw at the 2026 World Cup.
