China is now Africa’s biggest trading partner, with 20% of exports going to China and 16% of imports coming from there, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
At the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) meeting earlier this month, President Xi Jinping promised $50 billion for African development, including military support and new jobs.
While this partnership boosts development, it’s also raising worries about debt, dependency and power imbalances.
BBC Africa Daily’s Alan Kasujja spoke to experts Dr. Faith Mabera and Dr. Folashadé Soulé to break down these complex relations.
